Industrial Valve Selection: 7 Questions Before Procurement

A practical seven-point checklist for evaluating industrial valve requirements before requesting a quotation or approving a replacement.

Selecting an industrial valve is not simply a matter of matching the pipe size. The correct choice depends on the process fluid, operating conditions, required function, materials, connection standard, actuation method and maintenance environment.

A technically complete enquiry helps the supplier evaluate the application correctly and reduces avoidable clarification cycles. Before requesting a quotation or approving a replacement, consider the following seven questions.

1. What must the valve do?

Start with the required function. A valve may be needed for:

  • Isolation of equipment or a pipeline section
  • Flow regulation or throttling
  • Prevention of reverse flow
  • Pressure reduction or pressure protection
  • Drainage, venting or blowdown duty

The service function affects the suitable valve design. A valve selected for isolation may not provide stable control under throttling duty, while a non-return application requires a design that responds correctly to the flow conditions.

2. What fluid will pass through it?

Identify the medium clearly, including its composition and any characteristics that may affect valve performance. Important considerations include corrosiveness, solids content, viscosity, toxicity, cleanliness requirements and whether the fluid may crystallise or solidify.

A generic description such as “process liquid” is rarely enough. Better information helps assess body, trim, seat, seal and gasket compatibility.

3. What are the design and operating conditions?

Provide both normal operating conditions and the maximum design conditions. The minimum information normally includes:

  • Nominal pipe size
  • Operating and design pressure
  • Operating and design temperature
  • Expected flow rate, where relevant
  • Pressure differential across the valve
  • Frequency of operation

For control or severe-service duties, additional process data may be needed. Final selection should always be checked against the approved project specification and engineering requirements.

4. Which materials are suitable?

Valve material selection should consider the process medium, temperature, corrosion risk, erosion and surrounding environment. The body material alone does not determine compatibility; internal components, seats, seals, packing and bolting may also be critical.

When replacing an existing valve, record the original material specification and confirm whether the service conditions have changed since installation.

5. How will the valve connect to the system?

Confirm the end connection, size, rating and dimensional requirements. Connections may be flanged, threaded, welded or another project-specific arrangement. For replacement work, face-to-face dimensions and flange details can be essential to avoid site modification.

Clear photographs, nameplate information and dimensional sketches can help, but they should support—not replace—the approved technical specification.

6. How will the valve be operated?

Determine whether the valve requires manual, electric, pneumatic or hydraulic operation. For automated valves, the enquiry may also need:

  • Available power or air supply
  • Required fail position
  • Opening and closing time
  • Control signal and feedback requirements
  • Local or remote operation
  • Area and environmental conditions

Access for operation and maintenance should also be considered, especially in congested plant areas.

7. What documentation and inspection are required?

State the required documentation at the enquiry stage. Depending on the project, this may include drawings, data sheets, material documents, inspection records, test certificates, operating manuals and approved deviations.

If client, consultant or third-party approval is required, define the review points and document format before ordering.
